Utah becomes first state to allow AI to prescribe medication

SLC Scoop StaffUPDATED

Utah has approved what is believed to be the first U.S. pilot program allowing an AI system to issue initial medication prescriptions without a traditional doctor visit.

The program, launched by Nolla Health, is currently limited to acne treatment for Utah residents 18 and older. Users complete a medical questionnaire and facial scan before the AI generates a treatment plan and, if eligible, issues a prescription.

The system is limited to treatments already approved by doctors, and more complex cases are referred to a physician. During the initial rollout, AI-generated prescriptions will also receive additional physician review.

Supporters say the technology could make routine healthcare faster and more accessible, while some medical professionals have raised concerns about relying on AI for decisions traditionally made by licensed providers.
