What we collect

This page explains what SLC Scoop collects when you read the site, create an account or send us a tip, and what we do with it. SLC Scoop is run by SLCSCOOP LLC of West Jordan, Utah.

When you read

The basics your browser sends with every request: the page you asked for, your device and browser type, and your IP address.

When you create an account

  • Your email address
  • Your username, and your name and profile photo if you add them
  • How you signed in: email, Google or Apple
  • The stories you like or save, and the comments you post

Signing in with Google or Apple

We receive your name and email address from the provider. We never see your Google or Apple password.

When you join the newsletter

Your email address, so we can send you The Inbox Edition.

02

How we use it

  • To run the site and your account, and to send account emails like sign-in links and password resets
  • To read, check and report on the tips you send, and to reply if you left a contact email
  • To send the newsletter, if you signed up
  • To keep the site safe: blocking spam, abuse and banned accounts
  • To count readers and see which stories get read, so we know what Salt Lake wants covered

We don’t sell your personal information, and we don’t share it with advertisers. Sponsors pay for labeled spots on the site; they never get reader data.

03

Tips you send us

Much of our reporting starts with a tip, so tips get extra care.

  • Photos sent with a tip are re-encoded, and their location and camera data are removed before anyone sees them.
  • Video files are kept as you send them, so any location data inside the file stays in our copy. We never publish it.
  • The place you pick for a tip can appear with the story we publish.
  • Your IP address, and the contact email you can leave with a tip, are deleted 30 days after the tip arrives.
  • Editors never see that contact email. Replies are sent to it without showing it.
  • If you’re signed in and choose to stay anonymous, the tip stays linked to your account so you can follow it, but editors don’t see who sent it.

You can send a tip without an account or a contact email. See Can I stay anonymous? in Help.

04

Comments

Comments are public. Anyone can see your comment with your username and profile photo. Editors can see which account posted a comment and any reports about it.

Analytics and cookies

We use PostHog to count page views and see which stories get read. It sets a cookie on slcscoop.com so it can tell a returning visitor from a new one.

  • It records the page, where you came from, and your browser and device type.
  • It doesn’t record your email, your username, or anything you type into a tip or comment.
  • It doesn’t record your screen, your clicks around the page, or your mouse.

We also use cookies to keep you signed in. Sentry gets the error, your browser and device type, the page, and, if you’re signed in, an account ID. It never gets your IP address, your email or what you type.

You can block or clear cookies in your browser settings. The site still works, but you’ll need to sign in again.
