utah approves air quality permit for controversial parley's canyon mine
The approval comes after years of opposition from Millcreek and environmental groups concerned about dust and other impacts from mining in the canyon.
Utah has approved an air quality permit for the controversial Parley’s Canyon mine.
The Utah Division of Air Quality has issued the permit for Granite Construction’s proposed I-80 South Quarry in Parley’s Canyon, moving the project another step forward.
The project has faced years of opposition from Millcreek officials, environmental groups and nearby residents, with concerns focused on dust, air quality, water and impacts to the surrounding canyon. Granite has said the operation will meet state and federal air-quality standards and use required dust-control measures.
The air permit does not necessarily mean mining can immediately begin, as other approvals and local requirements have been part of the ongoing dispute over the project.
