spanish fork vote moves $3 billion data center project forward
City leaders approved a code amendment allowing Volition to continue pursuing plans to convert a roughly 1-million-square-foot warehouse near Spanish Fork Canyon.
The Spanish Fork City Council voted 3-2 to approve changes to city code establishing requirements for data centers and facilities that generate their own power, clearing a key hurdle for Volition’s proposed data center project.
Volition plans to convert the roughly 1-million-square-foot former Fingerhut warehouse near the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon into a data center. CEO Jeff Chavez estimates the project at approximately $3 billion and says full buildout could take up to three years.
The ordinance includes restrictions involving water use, noise, emissions and power generation. The proposal has drawn significant public debate, with residents raising concerns over resources and environmental impacts.
The vote does not mean construction immediately begins. Volition still needs to complete engineering and permitting, and city officials say a site plan and development agreement will require approval.
