washington city man sentenced to 15 years for $89 million investor fraud

Matthew Shane Perkins, 47, posed as a successful stock trader while defrauding approximately 200 investors, according to federal prosecutors. He was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release.

A Washington City man is heading to federal prison for 15 years after running an $89 million investment fraud scheme that defrauded over 200 victims.

Matthew Shane Perkins, 47, posed as a successful day trader between August 2023 and November 2025, providing falsified brokerage statements to investors that claimed over $133 million in profits.. When in reality, the fund had less than $13 million left.

Perkins used investor money to fund a home down payment, a cabin, luxury vehicles, and an airplane.

He pleaded guilty to wire fraud in February and was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Ann Marie McIff Allen to 180 months (15 years) in federal prison, plus three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $77,683,091.96 in restitution to his victims.
