Utah Emerges as Frontrunner for MLB Expansion Team
National reports say Utah and Nashville are viewed as leading MLB expansion candidates, with Larry H. Miller-backed Big League Utah helping fuel the push.
Utah is quickly becoming one of the strongest contenders for a future Major League Baseball expansion team.
According to a recent report from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Utah and Nashville are currently viewed as the leading candidates for MLB’s next two expansion franchises.
The growing momentum comes after years of effort from Big League Utah, a coalition backed by Larry H. Miller Sports + Entertainment that has pushed to bring professional baseball to Salt Lake City.
The group has gained support from former MLB players, business leaders, and public officials while also advancing plans for a future stadium site in downtown Salt Lake City’s Power District.
League officials have not announced an official expansion timeline, but MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has previously stated he hopes to move expansion discussions forward before his tenure ends in 2029.
Supporters of the Utah bid say the state offers a rapidly growing market, strong corporate backing, and an opportunity for Major League Baseball to expand into a new region with an established sports fan base.
While several cities remain interested in expansion, many analysts now view Utah as one of the league’s most prepared and organized potential destinations.
