A warrant has been issued for Osvaldo Vargas Zarate, 25, who is accused of a violent assault on I-15 near Lehi that prosecutors say nearly turned deadly.
According to court documents, Zarate allegedly attacked a woman while driving before pulling onto the shoulder and continuing the assault. Prosecutors say he repeatedly punched her, threatened to kill her, and left her with a concussion, a broken arm, and facial injuries requiring stitches. The attack allegedly happened in front of the couple’s 2-year-old daughter.
Investigators say Zarate then fled the scene with the child, leaving the injured woman on the side of the freeway. The child was later safely dropped off with relatives.
Zarate is charged with attempted murder and multiple other felonies. After failing to appear in court, a no-bail warrant was issued for his arrest. Authorities say he remains at large.
