utah man released after 41 years on death row as new dna excludes him
Douglas Stewart Carter, 71, was released on bail after new testing excluded him as a DNA match to key evidence from the 1985 killing of Eva Olesen.
After more than four decades on Utah’s death row, Douglas Stewart Carter has been released on bail as his murder conviction faces new scrutiny.
New DNA testing excluded Carter as a match to key evidence connected to the 1985 killing of Eva Olesen. Carter, now 71, had been convicted and sentenced to death in the case.
His release does not mean he has been formally exonerated. The case remains before the courts as questions surrounding the conviction continue to be reviewed.
