Salt Lake City leaders are proposing a 12.5% property tax increase as officials face rising costs tied to infrastructure, public safety, and city operations.

Mayor Erin Mendenhall presented the proposal Tuesday while unveiling the city’s nearly $500 million budget plan for the upcoming fiscal year. According to city officials, the increase would amount to an estimated $9.87 per month for a home valued around $624,000 and would generate approximately $13.5 million for the city budget.

During the address, Mendenhall pointed to increasing expenses across several departments, including the cost of replacing traffic signals, repairing roads, and purchasing firefighter equipment. City leaders also cited inflation and reductions in federal funding as major financial pressures impacting the budget.

Officials said the city explored multiple alternatives before proposing the increase, including spending reductions and operational changes aimed at lowering costs. The mayor described the proposal as a difficult but necessary decision intended to avoid larger service cuts or layoffs in the future.

Additional increases tied to public utilities, waste, and recycling services are also expected as the city continues funding major infrastructure projects, including upgrades to water systems and aging facilities.

The Salt Lake City Council is expected to hold public hearings on the proposed budget and tax increase later this month before a final vote is made in June.
