gov. cox warns of growing ai risks, calls for federal safeguards

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox is calling on Congress to establish federal safeguards for the most powerful AI systems as concerns grow over how quickly the technology is advancing.
Cox’s proposal includes mandatory reporting of serious AI safety incidents, protections for workers who raise credible concerns, and independent evaluations of advanced models. He also wants restrictions on the sale of powerful AI chips and related infrastructure to China.
Cox says the goal isn’t to stop AI development, but to make sure increasingly capable systems remain “human-guided and human-controlled.”
The push comes amid a broader national debate over how much oversight frontier AI should face and whether federal rules should be mandatory.
